Working with an Online Marketing Agency = Teamwork

You've probably worked with people in the past to market or advertise your company on one channel or another.  But no matter what you do, nothing seems to really work like you thought it would.  The relationship that you thought would be amazing fades over time and you just get more and more frustrated with each other.

A good marketing agency will become more like your partner.  They will want to know about your ups and downs.  They'll want to know when you're frustrated or happy with the leads you get as a result of their efforts.  They want to know what your goals and dreams are - because it's their job to help you reach them!

So it's important to go into a relationship with a good agency knowing that you will be expected to put in your fair share of effort too.  To give you an idea of what I mean by that, I'm going to pull back the curtains a bit and let you know how we work with our clients on their online marketing.

You are going to have to talk about your business!

We're going to ask you a lot of questions that you probably haven't put a lot of thought into before.  And we're going to talk to you a lot!  In fact, we reach out to our clients at least once a week to touch base and see how things are going and talk about what we've been working on and what we're going to be working on soon.

Some of those questions and conversations will involve things like:

  • What does your ideal customer look like?  Hint: "someone that has money" is NOT a good answer!
  • What are some common problems that people experience that prompt them to start seeking out your services/products?  Hint: notice that I didn't ask what makes them look for you - but rather, when do they look for what you offer!
  • What do you do better or worse than your competitors in the area?  And why should your customers care about that?
  • What are your goals for your life and your business?
  • What does your worst customer look like?  Hint:  knowing who you don't want is just as important as knowing who you do want.
  • It might feel like we're running you through the ringer in the beginning - but it's important that we know what's important to you and important to your customers.  For us to do a good job for you, these are things that we need to know.  It's worth it in the long run.

      And if a marketing company is asking these questions and using your answers to develop strategies for you, then you know they are putting you first and truly tailoring a strategy for you instead of using a cookie-cutter approach that doesn't tend to bring favorable results.

    Do your homework!

    I know... I know.  You got out of school forever ago and swore you'd never do homework again.  But this is important stuff too!  Your online marketing agency isn't psychic and there's only so much we can do without your help.  We'll give you things that you need to do and it's important that you make time to do them.  We try really hard to not overwhelm you and space things out to fit around your schedule.  

    We run a business too and we understand that customers always come first, so we try to be understanding and adapt.  But at the end of the day, you hired us to help you get to where you want to be.  We have to hold you accountable and keep you on track to make that happen.

    Provide useful feedback and listen to feedback from us!

    Surprisingly enough - telling us "I'm not sure, something just doesn't jive with it" does not help us fix it and make it better.  If we are doing something right or wrong it's important to let us know and to take the time to explain it the best you can.  That feedback helps keep you moving forward and stay on track.

    Likewise, remember that you hired us for a reason.  You wanted our expertise and experience at your table to help you, so make sure to listen to our feedback too.  By working together, we combine the best of our team with the best of yours and we can accomplish anything!

    It's all about trust and communication!

    The biggest takeaway from all that is that it's all about trust and communication.  You have to trust us and we have to trust you.  And we have to stay in communication about different things from the beginning and throughout the relationship.  That is how you are able to have a successful marketing strategy that delivers real results and improves over time.
