Why Your Employees Need Negative Feedback [infographic]

To quote Einstein, “Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new.”

Every mistake is an opportunity to learn and improve. But as an employer, we really hate giving negative feedback to our employees. We know they don’t want to hear it and we worry about crushing their morale.

In fact, many employers struggle with giving any feedback at all - good or bad. If you’re not providing feedback, then it’s likely that 4 out of 10 of your employees are actively disengaged in their jobs. This obviously isn’t helping you, your company, or them.


So let’s look at what you can do to turn this trend around:

My favorite takeaways from it include:

  • Most people hate bad criticism. They react by just not taking it well, obsessing on it, becoming de-motivated, feeling degraded, or refusing to accept it.
  • You need to handle each generation a bit differently. Millennials need feedback on their performance more often than Baby Boomers.
  • Workers are craving feedback - without it they feel disengaged and their morale is damaged.
  • The feedback needs to be work-oriented and not personal, and it needs to be specific.
  • Most of them are expecting it anyway and aren’t surprised by what you’re saying.
  • With feedback, your employees perform better and are more engaged.
